Today we visited Clare Museum to learn about the Celtic festival 'Bealtaine'. Bealtaine (May Day) marks the beginning of summer in the ancient Celtic calendar and signals the end of the dark half of the year. A local storyteller, Ruth Marshall, told us some traditional folk stories associated with the beginning of summer. She showed us examples of wildflowers and herbs that grow at this time of year and taught us a song and game that children played in the past. We learned that children in the past danced around a maypole and collected wildflowers at this time of year. Ruth sang the songs 'Go Lassie go' and 'Thugamar Féin an Samhradh Linn' with us. We even crowned the May King and Queen! A great morning was had by all!
We all passed our Accelerated Reader targets last term. As a reward for our excellent reading, we got to enjoy some ice-cream in the sunshine. Well done to us all! Here are some maths links for practicing your money work.
We had so much fun today when a scientist visited us to teach us all about rockets and space technology. We worked in groups to design and make rockets using plastic bottles, tennis balls, cardboard and masking tape. The best bit was when we went outside to launch the rockets into the sky. We love science! Today we welcomed spring by making St. Brigid's crosses. We wove rushes together to make beautiful crosses just like Brigid did. It was hard work but we all succeeded in the end. Click on the button to listen to 'We Sing A Song To Brigid'. Thanks to all the parents who joined us in third class for 'Maths for Fun' over the past four weeks. We had a great time playing maths games and constructing 3-D shapes. We loved having parents in our classroom to share in the fun.
As a reward for reaching our Accelerated Reader targets, before the Halloween break, we got to make these colourful masks. We painted them in lovely bright colours and decorated them with glitter, gems, feathers and markers.
