Schools recognise the importance of children’s emotional development and the impact this has on learning.
After much research and with the support of their Boards of Management, a number of primary schools in Co. Clare have undertaken the Incredible Years Programme for teaching staff.
The Incredible Years Programmes (for parents and teachers) are designed to enhance the social, emotional, academic and behavioural development of young children.
We are now offering the Incredible Years Parents Programme to parents of children in these schools and in the wider community.
What does it involve?
The Incredible Years programme provides parents with practical ideas, using video examples of real life children interacting with their parents. It involves group led discussions about every day challenges and concerns that parents may have and offers step-by-step suggestions on how to handle them.
The programme which is being run in schools throughout the country has been very successful in helping to promote children’s social academic and emotional development. It also helps parents develop meaningful relationships with their children.
How does the Incredible Years Programme benefit families?
The course will cover a wide range of areas to help parents:
Play: Parents are taught how to play with their children in a way that facilitates the development of their children’s self-esteem and learning as well as nurturing a positive bond between them.
Praise and Rewards: Parents are helped to give children consistent attention, approval and praise for good behaviour rather than discipline for misbehaviour. They are helped to identify the behaviours that they want to promote, to look for those behaviours and to praise them.
Effective Limit Setting: Parents are taught the importance of rules and limits in providing their children with a sense of stability and security. They are taught how to set consistent limits and how to respond to children in clear, predictable ways so that they can learn which behaviours are appropriate and which are not.
Handling Misbehaviour: Parents are taught effective discipline techniques including logical and natural consequences, problem solving strategies, such as ‘Ignore’ and ‘Time Out’.
